I'm also a Moriarty fan and had no idea she had a book out, mostly because (I think) it got left off all the best-of lists because of this joke of a cover. I am nowhere near the bestselling status of Moriarty, and yet, if my publisher showed my agent this, she would...let's just say that cider would be made out of those apples. LEAD WITH TENNIS! There are so many incredible phrases they could have taken from tennis (Break point, duh??). Maybe they're trying to sell a Yankee Candle at the same time, I don't know, but I guess I'll have to read this on kindle so I don't have to stare at this cover. And yes, I would love more cover rants!
Oh, I'm glad you agree! I didn't know she had a new one out, either, and when I saw this cover, I thought, "Oh, this must be an old early book that they re-released." More cover rants to come!
Thanks for this Amy, you kept me entertained over today's lunchbreak at the desk! I've watched your Skillshare class, it's fab. Then I attempted the project and ended up with something that didn't meet the brief at all. Doh! I'll have another go at it soon. If it's a bit closer to the principles of what you were teaching, I'll upload it. I'm trying not to get frustrated with my fledgling sketchbook practice at the moment. I feel like I'm going backwards!
Going backwards is good! You back up when you move in a new direction. I just took a workshop with the great painter Terry Miura last weekend, and he talked about how his whole life as an artist has been about hitting walls and having to move past them. He says the walls keep getting higher. Then you figure that one out, and you plateau for a while, then you hit the next one. Anyway, the best sketchbook practice is the one where you fill up sketchbooks. Keep going!
So many interesting things to read in this post - thank you! I am especially interested in the sketchbook class and intend to sign-up. I already love working in my watercolor sketchbook and take it whenever I travel too (admittedly that has not been often these past couple of years!) but I really love your style in this limited palette, quick line technique. I look forward to learning more and practicing it in the class and in my sketchbook. I always look forward to your newsletter. Thanks for giving me new things to try and to think about!
Love the cover rants!

Yes. I vote for more cover rants. Having worked in 3 bookstores, I have lots of cover opinions myself. It's refreshing to know that I'm not alone.

Cheers Amy. Yes I’ll keep plugging away. I do love the process. I bet that was a good workshop... what a treat!
I love your newsletters - so varied and entertaining. And I love both books and rants so carry on please!
I’m always up for a great rant. Continue please.
Always love your newsletters Amy!
Keep them coming☺️
