Partially inspired by your post, I set up an artist initiated residency with a recording studio and will be spending a full day each month in a world class studio making music next year.

I too have been inspired by your artist-in-residence post but instead of a place, I’m going to be artist in residence of the bees—native, honey, bumble, sweat. So, I guess I’m the hive-in-residence!

Yay, I love this, Amy--I want to appoint myself for a residency, too!

And, as I'm the selection committee--and the only writer/collage artist/vegan peanut butter chocolate chip cookie baker on the list of nominees (make that nominee, singular), I'm pleased to announce I just received notice that I've been awarded the fall/winter writer's residency! I'm so happy! :)

Thank you, Amy, for mentionning my Substack here and most of all for having this genius idea of a Self Appointed Artist's Residency and sharing it with us.

First and foremost it has made my creatif process more joyful, adding an element of play to it :)

And there is another element I've been thinking a lot about lately. I've never had a "non self appointed" art residency but I suppose one of its benefits is the possibility to let one's work evolve within a "constraint": time, place, subject matter... It's incredibly enriching. By giving ourselves that opportunity within our own residencies we can truly take our art in all kinds of unsuspected directions!

And of course it's wonderfully liberating to stop waiting for someone else's permission to become an artist!

Absolutely agree. And while I dabble in "art" I am an author -- maybe the forgotten art. In any case I can see so much good coming from this and an entirely new way to suck the last ounce of effort from my body. But, what the heck, I submitted my application and was approved as the Author in Residence at Castle Hayne (my tiny suburb of Wilmington, NC). Now, what and when to do. Stay tuned!

The "bringing joy" thing really worked. Bobby Banas is cool. I'm out of work right now and really needed cheering up. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this gift of joy. It is exactly what I need today after a very hard and depressing week. I haven't even felt much like opening my sketchbook. Being outside in the sunshine and seeing all the glowing leaves has been one of the things that has helped. Now I look forward to painting with the added inspiration of your video. Maybe while I'm out with the beauty of what looks to be a lovely morning I'll even feel like trying a few joyful dance steps. Really, thank you for this post today!!

Loved your talk this past year in Santa Cruz. I've always loved that Bobby Banas dance, and here's a modern interpretation by two swing dance teachers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m01f4uAn1AA. Hope you enjoy!
