Good morning, Amy. After Labor Day weekend, I mentioned to my Facebook friends that I spent the weekend filling up my lake in Western Kentucky, and I couldn’t remember who said or wrote this. And then look! Here you are at the top of my Notes feed, reminding me you were my person. Thank you for this, and have a beautiful day! Now I will remember you!

Hi Amy,

Wonderful and insightful message to become the artist in residence of your world! I’m deep into my third act and as a recent widow and visual artist for decades, my life too has been filled with residencies. Whether in Oaxaca City , home studio in New Hampshire and just recently at the Chautauqua Institute in NY. Agreed, the solitary focus and personal pursuit is necessary to filter out the distractions and noise surrounding us. It’s also a daily choice to cultivate our inner landscapes. Cannot express the colliding emotions of grief/joy that percolates in my work during these solitary periods. So glad to read this today.

I love this, and amazingly, I just finished reading a book about the Chautauqua Institute. Small world. Anyway keep in touch and let me know about any residencies you do, self-appointed or otherwise! I'm going to feature them in upcoming newsletters.

Oh goodness the timing of this is just wonderful, this weekend I started painting all of the signs in my neighborhood (very, very rural, so it’s mostly a collection of posted signs), can’t wait to follow along!

Oh I love that and I hope you’ll share!

I am eight months postpartum and this is such a liberating container/perspective shift. I feel so called to residency programs but so few are friendly to the logistics of early motherhood. Thank you for sharing and facilitating- this has given me so much to ponder!

Oh good! Much more to come, so I hope you'll stay in touch and keep pondering!

This is a really, really, really good idea! As someone who, in their mid-50s, is just starting out on a creative career as a photographer this is such a wonderful little tip. Thank you!

I love this idea of self-appointed artist in residence! After drawing my wonderful city for the past two years, I now declare myself Artist in Residence of Hadar HaCarmel, Haifa.

I’m just now reading this and love the idea. I was telling someone recently that I’m terrified about doing art out in public. They suggested I go to a coffee shop, order coffee and then sketch the cup. Then leave. I think now I want to claim residence in my nearest coffee shop and go draw everything. Thanks for this inspiration. I’m a 73 yr old retired elementary teacher and have been learning watercolor since I retired. It’s the best job I’ve ever had. Ann

That's great! Give it a go! I do a lot of sketching outside (sometimes I film this for paid subscribers), and I can promise that you will mostly be completely ignored. The few people who do comment mostly just say "Hey that's nice" and keep walking. But yes, a coffee shop is a great place to start!
