Oh, Amy, what inspiration. Thank you for dropping all the links to Maria Kalman’s work and life. My neighbors put a stack of outdoor chairs out a few weeks ago, but the bottoms fell out, and so far, there are no takers. I walk by each day, hopeful someone will rescue them. And I don’t know why, but the stack reminds me of the first time I drew the negative space of a chair in a studio class, which feels like a fabulous prompt to start my day.
I just put My Favorite Things on hold at my library and can't wait to read it. Very cool Maira Kalman week and I think I will write my own job description!
"A lot of us probably notice the broken chairs people put out on the sidewalk. Maybe you, like me, stop to contemplate them and wonder about the lives they’ve had and the lives they might still have, if someone takes them home and spruces them up." Yup, yup!
I discovered Maira Kalman through you! I’m in love. I got Michael Pollan’s Food Rules with her illustrations just yesterday, at Powells. Score! Now I have to go back and watch The Residence again because I was just on Shonda Rhimes and her birding, and ignorant about Kalman. Thanks for another great rabbit hole for me to fall into.
I loved The Residence and clocked the art in the credits as cool and familiar but not as Maira Kalman! Thanks for that insight. And for all the Kalman content. Good to spend some time with her.
Oh my gosh, Maira Kalman is my best friend too! My favorite of her books is her most recent, Women Holding Things. I love how the meaning of hold changes as you move through the pages. Thank you for so many portals to hear Maira’s thoughts. I can’t wait to delve:)
I’ve been such a big fan of Maira Kalman for so many years. I think she is the embodiment of what happens when you allow your creative completely loose, no holds barred.
I instantly (and joyfully) recognized Maira’s magical hand in The Residence credits, but hadn’t read the interviews. Thanks so much for those handy links!
Love this! I’m Harrison, an ex fine dining industry line cook. My stack "The Secret Ingredient" adapts hit restaurant recipes (mostly NYC and L.A.) for easy home cooking.
Recently I reread all 7 Kopp Sister books and was more enchanted than ever with these women. I know you have said there are no more books coming BUT you clearly say in the Author Notes that there was plenty to write another of the Kopp Sister Detectives. I want to hold you to that promise!! Please??

Love this and the idea to write our own job description! The best! Thanks, Amy.
