Art 104: A Basket of Produce

Here’s an ink and watercolor drawing from a photo that Sharon sent me. I’ll be mailing the original to her; if you want to get in on this deal, read the details at the bottom of the page.

I’m doing these to show that there are lots of different ways to draw something, and to show you how I might draw some scene from your world. Feel free to draw your own version of these—it’s great practice.

Here’s how I approached this one:

  • I cropped it slightly to fit the format.

  • I ignored the bag the green beans are in—it would be a bit tricky to draw that bag and have it make sense. We all know what green beans look like, so it wasn’t hard to draw those from imagination.

  • I drew this with waterproof India ink and a dip pen, which we explored right here. But you could use any kind of waterproof drawing pen, and maybe a waterproof marker (like a Faber Castell Pitt brush pen) to do the same.

  • I chose to do these dark, inky shadows rather than draw every detail of the inside of the basket. We know these ar…
